History of the Crook and Shears
The building itself was built in 1604 and was originally 2 small shepherds’ cottages, it was then made into a Coaching Inn in 1804. The cottages were then sold in 1825 when it became a full Coaching House when the Saddle Room was originally built as a Stable.
It became a pub and The Crook and Shears in 1901 and has had many changes in its appearance and Landlords.
It has been said that the pub has had 8 ghosts in its history the most famous is a girl called Mabel, who was allegedly murdered by a coachman on the order of the local clergyman who had gotten her pregnant. She is apparently buried under the famous wisteria tree in the courtyard.
The village has hosted some famous residents, Stephen Hopkins was Baptised in the church in 1581 and sailed to America on the Sea Venture in 1609 and on the Mayflower in 1620, also Chris Britton who was a member of The Troggs who famously performed ‘Wild Thing’.
